A Trip to the Coast with Mark, Suzy, and Evelyn

Last weekend Spencer's brother and family came up for a visit. On day one of their trip here we took off and headed for the coast. We first stopped along the Chetco River to build a fire and cook hot dogs and tin foil dinners.
I guess I caught the guys off guard and mid-dance move in this picture.

Lila was a fun little camper. She explored, yet stayed within a close distance so I didn't have to worry about her.

We brought firewood from home, but turns out the wood from our tree in the back yard doesn't burn well because of the moss and moisture under the bark. Our little worker bee Luke was right along side his dad helping bring wood to the fire. He really does love to get in there and work.

Cute little "friends". At times they would squeal together and toddle off to play. Other times, Lila would take a toy from Evelyn and Evelyn would scratch Lila's face. You would think Lila would have learned her lesson, not to take toys, particularly from Evelyn. We will give them time for their teetering friendship to blossom.

After our meal we went to our yurt site. We stayed at the campground at Harris Beach. Yurts are fabulous. They have beds, heaters, electricity, and there is no set up or take down.

We went down to Harris Beach. We couldn't see anything, but we could hear the waves and feel the ocean breeze. It was creepy at first, but then it became fun and interesting.

And here is Harris Beach in the morning. It has amazing rocks jutting out of the ocean near the shoreline.

After Harris Beach we hit McDonalds. McDonalds is a real treat for us, a rarity and a convenience.

We made our way down the coast. We stopped at Battery Point Light House in Crescent City.

Further south we stopped at the big Paul Bunyon outside Redwoods National Park.

We then went north a mile to our favorite "playing" beach.

Mark's initial reaction to the beach was to run around in circles by the water like a happy dog.

As always, we built a sea fort on the beach. We build it close enough to the shore that we have to build fortifications against the big waves when they surge up the beach. It is thrilling when our fort withstands the eroding power of the surf.

On our way home we stopped at Jedidiah Smith State park and walked through the Reed-Simpson Redwood Grove.

Luke always finds great walking sticks, even these ones that look more like tentacles.

After we got home we made dinner. Our dessert was home made ice cream, made with the ice cream maker we bought at a yard sale three weekends ago. Well, the ice cream maker's motor broke so Spencer and Mark churned the ice cream by hand.

It was a fun weekend. Mark and Suzy stayed through the week but I have zero pictures of us sitting around visiting or going to stores. Sorry.
