Annular Eclipse

There was an annular eclipse on Sunday.  Spencer rigged up a way to view it as the moon crossed in front of the sun.  He put our binoculars on a tripod and angled them so that the sun shone through the lenses and then put out a piece of paper to capture the silhouette of the moon.  He cut a hole in a piece of cardboard to shade the paper so that the light from the binoculars contrasted better.  We were too busy looking to get a good picture so this is the best picture we got of it when the moon was centered in front of the sun.  You can somewhat see the complete circle of light with the silhouette of the moon in the middle; a.k.a. the ring of fire.

 Here's the set up.  We also used Spencer's welding helmet which allowed us to look directly at the eclipse.  It gave us a green sun.

 We took a picture through the welding helmet.  We couldn't get a picture of the ring of fire because the shutter stayed open too long since there was so little light.  They just came out blurry.  

 We trimmed and pruned a whole bunch of bushes and trees in the back yard.  It was a lot of work to clean up the leaves and branches and you can't really tell that any work was done.  

Below, Luke piled the leaves in around Andrew who was more than willing to ride along with the discarded foliage.  

Lately I have been finding Andrew under the vinyl on our table, rolling around, making merry.
